Making Zimbabwean jumbo doughnuts

Making Zimbabwean jumbo doughnuts

When Mai Ano was growing up she used to love this treat called jumbo doughnuts. In Harare they were known as ‘ma jumbo’ – meaning the jumbos.
They were such an amazing treat and all the kids really looked forward to shopping trips or times they had to travel from Mbare on the bus. They were guaranteed ma jumbo or ma cream doughnuts for sure!
So nostalgia sent us on this trip around the internet to try and find a recipe for ma jumbo.
The closest we found was this recipe. It seems to say all the right things and the end result looks quite good.
So we gave it a go.
Watch for the step by step recipe as Mai Ano na Ano wacho (Ano herself) make these.
We hope you try this one out at home. Prepare for your tastebuds to melt with joy! These are very calorie dense so we do highly recommend them as a very occasional treat.

500g all purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 oz sachet)
12 oz (354ml) evaporated milk (we couldn’t find any so we used full fat milk
3 tablespoons melted butter
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 level teaspoon salt
1 egg
Oil for frying
