Shona language counting games

How do you say hello in Shona?

Welcome to day 10 of our #ShonaChallenge!
Day 10!
We’re a third of the way there. We hope you’re enjoying the challenge and are having fun with it so far.
Today we are learning how to say hello in Shona.

There are many different greetings in the Shona language.
They differ depending on whether you are talking to a friend or greeting a respected person.
There are also traditional greetings that call on a person’s totem. Some have clapping (kuwombera), kneeling (kupfugama), and specific things you have to say to show your respect.

Today we are going to cover 3 greetings.
Ano and Vongai are going to say good afternoon to mummy.
They will also learn how to say good morning to mummy.
This involves kneeling and clapping.

Gogo Alice will then do a more specific traditional greeting. Using similes and the totem (mutupo) of the addressee to signify respect and observance of culture.

Have you heard any of these greetings?
What greetings do you use when greeting your friends, your elders, people you respect in your society?

Have you done our Shona challenge? It’s open to the whole family. We’d love to see your videos online. Just tag us and we will retweet or repost you on social media
