Mwana wenyu achema akoma – Shona lullaby

Mwana wenyu achema akoma is more popularly known as hwe hu hwe nyarara nhanha.
Nhanha means baby, and even if one does not know the lyrics of the song this is a very popular shona lullaby from Zimbabwe. Shona lullabies are not necessarily to be directly interpreted.
This poem is as much an observation of life and relationships as it is a soothing poem to sing to a child to go to sleep.
Traditionally it is sung with the child in a ‘mbereko’ or baby carrier. Worn on the back, the child is lulled to sleep by the rocking motion of the mother as they hear this poem.
This is a wonderful little song to help you learn Shona language along with us.
